Charlevoix Women’s Health Care recently welcomed a new specialist to the growing Obstetrics & Gynecology group.   Mary Ivey, MD, has joined Drs. James Jeakle and William Mosher, III, and will begin seeing patients in September.

Dr. Ivey, who practiced in Petoskey two years ago, comes to the Charlevoix group from Manistee.  She earned a BS in Biochemistry from Auburn University and her medical degree from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine, where she was named Medical Student of the Year in 1999.  Following that, she served her OB/Gyn residency at Spectrum Health Blodgett and St. Mary’s Hospitals in Grand Rapids.

“I’m delighted to be back in this area and equally happy to be part of the Women’s Health Care group,” says Dr. Ivey.  Eager to become part of the community, she will see patients in Charlevoix and at the Boyne Area Medical Center, and plans to speak to women’s groups about a variety of health issues.

“There’s so much new in the way of treatment for common female problems like endometriosis,” she explains.  “Today, many women can enjoy a greatly improved quality of life through easy, minimally invasive procedures.”

In addition to offering new gynecological surgeries and ongoing women’s care, Dr. Ivey will provide pre- and postnatal care and deliver babies at Charlevoix Area Hospital’s Birthing Center.  Her practice will include women of all ages—from puberty through menopause, and beyond.

“As a woman, I think I can bring a special sensitivity and understanding of the concerns women face,” Dr. Ivey says, adding, “The reproductive system is wonderfully designed, but it’s pretty complex.  I try to treat each patient as a friend or a sister.  That way I know I’m giving my best.”

Dr. Ivey’s husband, Mark Smith, MD, is a family physician.  They, and their two young children Riley and Ellery, will make their home in Charlevoix.
